A Focus on VTE Prophylaxis in the Medically Ill Population- Devise methods to measure an institution's effectiveness at delivering appropriate VTE prophylaxis to medically ill patients. Determine the appropriateness of a prescribed VTE prophylaxis regimen in a specific patient case. Analyze a risk-assessment strategy for the prevention of VTE in hospitalized patients. Identify gaps in care when suboptimal VTE prophylaxis is given and recommend strategies to close those gaps. Optimizing VTE Prophylaxis in Surgical Patients- Compare risk assessment strategies for the prevention of VTE. Describe the optimal approach for ordering VTE prophylaxis. Devise an appropriate thromboprophylaxis strategy for a surgical patient. Apply evidence-based guidelines for regional anesthesia (i.e., epidural or spinal anesthesia) in patients prescribed anticoagulation for VTE prevention. Recognize and apply techniques for improving the quality of VTE prophylaxis. Venous Thromboembolism in Children and Adolescents- Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE) in children and adolescents. Identify pediatric pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of heparin, low molecular weight heparins, and warfarin. Evaluate current guidelines and evidence for the prophylaxis and treatment of VTE in children and adolescents. Describe the practical implications and options for outpatient VTE therapy in children and adolescents.
