Best Practices for Improved Awareness, Diagnosis, and Treatment of HIV- Outline practical strategies to overcome underdiagnosis and undertreatment of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS), including new and improved approaches to screening and diagnostic testing. Explain recent clinical data that supports the impact of earlier initiation of first-line antiretroviral (ARV) treatment on long-term outcomes in treatment-naive HIV patients. Identify barriers to optimal care of HIV patients, including patient nonadherence, and discuss practical solutions to minimize these barriers. Individualize ARV therapy to specific patient demographics and characteristics, including co-morbidities. Implement current treatment guidelines and recent data (Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy/Infectious Diseases Society of America) for optimal management of HIV patients, with focus on treatment initiation and selection.
