Making Referrals to Pain Specialists- When and How

When Should You Make a Referral to a Pain Specialist?- Pain is a common symptom that a general practitioner faces in patients.  Due to commonality, pain medication is among the most abused prescription medications in the US today.  Despite these realities, many physicians are not armed with the latest information and resources with which to manage their patients' pain while monitoring for abuse.  In many circumstances, referral to a pain specialist who is well-versed in pain management, and pain patient management, is appropriate.
Refer patients to a pain specialist when appropriate.
Identify types of persistent and/or chronic pain.
Manage patients' potential for misuse of opioids.
Suggest non-opioid treatments for the pain patient.
